Visiting Diamond Head Beach Park
Getting there
Diamond Head Beach Park is a short, 5-10 minute drive east of Waikiki. Fortunately, you can take an Uber/Lyft/Taxi if you don’t have a car. Parking is along the road, but when the surf is up, it can be hard to find a spot.
Before you descend to the beach below, check out the surf from the viewpoints at street level. It was our favorite surf spot when we still lived in town. and still surfed. Poor surfboard sitting in the closet. It’s just not right. Once you’ve soaked up the sites, follow the paved pathway to the beach and head right to get to the tidepools.
Timing matters.
Diamond Head Beach isn’t particularly wide so there’s noticeably less beach at high tide. If possible, aim for high tide to have more space and access to the rocky tide pools. not a wide beach.
What to pack for a visit to Diamond Head Beach Park?
Diamond Head Beach Park isn’t really suitable for swimming. It’s fun to explore the tidepools, enjoy sunset, and surf.
- Reef-safe Sunscreen – Did you know that some sunscreen ingredients are highly damaging to coral reef ecosystems and exposure has been linked to coral bleaching and coral DNA damage? That’s why Hawaii banned the use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone and octocrylene in 2021. P.S., most of these chemicals are bad for humans as well and have been banned in other countries. What to do? Keep yourself covered with UV protective clothing and use reef safe sunscreen.
- A trusty Dry Bag – Keep your valuables and electronics snug, dry, and sand-free. A dry bag ensures peace of mind while you dive into the Cove’s beauty! The dry bags low key cousin – Ziploc bag – also does the same job. Either way, wrap valuables in a towel and tuck under a rock to keep gear out of the sun.
- Water-resistant Smartphone Case – Capture your family’s aquatic adventures without worrying about the water gods claiming your phone. Bonus, you keep your phone safe while you capture happy ocean play memories.
- A dip net and bucket. – If you have little kids who love to explore, they will delight in catching tiny fish and crabs in the tide pools at Diamond Head Beach Park.
- A Picnic. It’s such a lovely spot at sunset that it’s ideal for a picnic.
- Surfboard. If you have surfers in your family, definitely bring a board!
Do yourself a favor and escape Waikiki. Breathe in some fresh air, let the kids roam, and free yourself from the noise and chaos of Honolulu. If you’re not lame like me, you’ll bring your surfboard along and catch a couple of waves while the kids explore.
