Surprise reunion | Hawaii family reunion

Rain beat down around us indenting the soft sand and making crabs scurry into their holes. We could have sought shelter, but we were transfixed by the sun slowly rising over the horizon, spreading a warm glow. The contrast was dramatic and spectacular. It was one of those mornings where you kick yourself for not getting up early every single morning to take in this sight.

We found ourselves on the beach that morning for a special occasion – a family reunion. Hawaii is a long haul from just about everywhere in the world. The time and expense of travel makes it challenging for families who have relocated here to connect with extended family. You may only see aunties, uncles and grandparents every few years. For most, that’s just not enough. Family photo sessions are a fun way to keep in touch with loved ones far away. They offer a peek into family life (and make the best gifts ever!), but an even better option is celebrating a family reunion.

Fatima’s mom and aunt (twin sisters!) were flying in for a special visit so Fatima surprised them by flying her sister in too. The happy group planned an action-packed week exploring the island starting with a photo session at Bellows Beach. They danced and laughed together in the rain. Nolan, the only child in the group tried hard not smile. He told us he hates having his photo taken and that we were lucky he wasn’t running in the other direction. His mom and aunties continued to rib him and love on him. I think it’s safe to say that he lost that battle.
