I first photographed this fast-moving family during a visit last year when I was slowed down by bout of pneumonia. Even with 100% health, they’re hard to keep up with. I thought an early morning wake-up call might slow them down a bit this time. We met at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park as roosters crowed and the sun was just beginning to warm the horizon. It turns out time of day is irrelevant when the beach is calling. The kids dashed out of the car and made a beeline for the beach amidst a swirl of giggles and excited shouts.
They ran along the shore teasing the waves, searching for ghost crabs, and playing games until it was warm enough for swimsuits. In the water, they are fearless. Further and further out into the surf they ventured as waves pounded overhead. Sand battles raged back on shore and everyone was fairly exhausted and starving after a few hours. Next visit, we have big plans to visit the Kaneohe sandbar – the perfect playground for an energetic, water-loving family.
