If you don’t know this already, Paradise Cove is a great place to swim with Hawaii’s green sea turtles. There’s some seasonality with more turtle sightings in winter compared to summer. They’re also more common at high tide since it’s harder to access the cove at low tide. On most days you can see one or two, but some days the tiny cove is packed with turtles. Heads pop up here and there like a game of whack-a-mole. Wait, maybe that’s not a good visual. Please don’t bring a giant foam hammer with you to the cove. Anyway, if you’re standing in the water, there’s a good chance you’re going to get bumped as turtles get pushed by the surf. On this particular day I was goosed by a turtle in front of a big crowd. The crowd thought it was hysterical.
The photo session
As we walked out to the cove that morning, we didn’t know what was in store. We played games on the beach and checked out the tide pools and then began to spot turtles. First one and then two and then it was hard to keep track. The kids were bubbling over with excitement so we quickly changed and joined the turtles. Turtles swam around snagging bits of seaweed in the water while we gawked in amazement. I can’t think of a better way to end a photo session.
