The (delayed) beach lovers
“Sand! Beach! Water!” Gabby shrieked with excitement. She ran in circles unsure what to explore first. Kristian, meanwhile eyed the scene skeptically. He was frightened by the crashing waves, the shadow-y forest, and certainly did not want any of that sand stuff touching his feet. His parents were shocked. True, it was the children’s first visit to Oahu and the beach, but with parents born and raised on the island it seemed like some ocean love would have seeped into the next generation. Or maybe Gabby got it all. “Sand! Beach! Water!” She charged the pounding surf, her mom tailing close behind.
A bonus session
When people are excited about playing in the ocean, I get excited. And returning home with children? That’s a big deal. I so wanted them to play and explore at the beach so I could capture some of the same sun-soaked memories from their own childhood. The session went okay, but we were missing the water element. It was early in their vacation so I told them to let me know if anything changes. And it did. Big time. I caught up with them again towards the end of their stay for pure beach fun. The tables had turned. Kristian was now squealing with delight as he splashed through the surf while Gabby was content to play in the sand. Now, if only the didn’t go back home.
