Nicole grew up on the windward side of Oahu and when we were brainstorming ideas for family photo locations, her memories came flooding back. Ka’a’awa Beach was a childhood favorite. She would explore this wild stretch of shoreline as a little girl along with her cousins, aunties and uncles. She remembered lazy days spent making sand castles and swimming in the shallows, sandy snacks, and naps in the shade.
It’s a beautiful spot to call your own. The long spine of Kualoa and the entrance to Ka’a’awa Valley (home of movie famous Kualoa Ranch) loom large in the distance. Offshore is a shallow fringing reef frequented by fisherman. It’s possible to snorkel although conditions are often windy leaving the water a choppy mess with limited visibility. Most importantly, it felt like home and so we planned for Ka’a’awa Beach family photos.
About the Ka’a’awa Beach session
I haven’t spent much time at Ka’a’awa Beach myself. It’s such a small beach that just a handful of families playing along the shore make it feel crowded. And when the limited parking fills up (maybe a dozen cars), you really have no nearby alternatives.
The road passes so close to the ocean along this stretch of island that you can easily scope it out. On this particular weekday evening I was relieved to find it empty. I watched a crab forage among the rocks while I waited for Nicole and her family to her arrive.
It had been a few years since I saw them last. At that time, they were a family of three and we spent a memorable morning at Kalama Beach under alternating rain and rainbows – a winter special in Hawaii. I was excited to meet their now complete family of four.
They arrived in a whirlwind of excitement for their beach day. The kids were experienced beach pros and immediately got down to the business of beach. The oldest acted as tour guide showing off all the features of Ka’a’awa and pointing out various treasures – a kukui nut, a coconut husk, a crab claw. It was all over too quickly as bedtime was looming. My heart warmed to spend time with such a kind, loving family and I look forward to seeing them again.

This tiny beach with big views is great for small families while nearby Kualoa Beach Park is a better option for large groups or very active children. Or why not make the best of both worlds and visit both?
