We are lucky to live by the beach. Kalama Beach Park is exactly one mile from home and I run that beach route with my 9-year-old weekly while he chats about all things Minecraft. I’ve discovered that if I help him create and act out Minecraft scenarios during our run, he will go twice as far without complaining. If you ever see us stabbing and slashing the air while jumping over imaginary objects, don’t be frightened.
With a 3-month-old baby and toddler in tow, Emma was unsure how the kids would react to the beach. Her oldest wasn’t a huge fan during their last visit to Hawaii and spent most of their beach time sampling the sand. They needed a beach park and decided on Kalamas, my “home” beach. Since I spend so much time there, I forget just how lovely it is. As I led them through a gap in the shrubs onto the chilled morning sand, they let out an audible gasp. It’s a lovely reminder of how special Kailua is.
As the sun rose over the water, we made sand castles and tested our toes in the water. And when it got hot, we retired to the shade to snack, climb trees and search for roosters.
