The Upside of Rain
Connie and her family were visiting Oahu on vacation. They wanted to take advantage of their time here and capture family photos with the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii. Based on past photo experiences, however, she knew the kids would protest. They hated having their picture taken and she didn’t want to make everyone miserable on vacation. We talked for a bit and came up with a game plan. The kids love playing at the beach so we would just let them play and have fun.
A Family-Friendly Beach
Connie selected kid-friendly Kalama Beach Park in Kailua. Easy access, bathrooms, shade and a bit of surf make it a family favorite. The kids were so excited that they begged to come early. They were happily splashing in the water before I arrived, but, unfortunately, so was everyone else
The beach was packed with families. Big shade tents lined the shore and families seemed to fill from the shallows to drop off. A small swell was attracting body boarders in droves.
I was about to herd the water logged due down the beach to a less crowded area when a sudden rain squall passed overhead. This was no friendly dusting of rain, but a serious down pour. Families hurriedly packed and scrambled for cover. They dashed about grabbing small children and sand toys and within a few minutes, the beach was empty.
For our troubles we were gifted double rainbows stretching over Kailua Bay and fun evening playing in the surf.
Do You Have a Water-loving Photo-hating Family?
A photo session doesn’t have to be hard! Let’s hit the beach for a fun afternoon of body-boarding and splashing in the surf. Maybe we’ll get some rainbows to top it off. Find out more about my fun family photography sessions here.
