We arrived at Lanikai Beach in Kailua just before sunrise, eager to catch the first golden rays of light shine over the Mokes. Hawaii is a special place for this family and Lanikai is a favorite beach. With it’s impossibly fine sand, shallow entry, and gentle waves, it’s a perfect beach for families with young children.
Our enthusiasm dampened before we even made it to the beach. We were barely out of our cars when the first rain drops hit the pavement in a dramatic crescendo. “But it wasn’t supposed to rain today!” I yelled at my phone and the sky in general. We retreated to our cars and I consulted my favorite weather app (Dark sky). “Rain stopping in 3 minutes”, it told me. I love how oddly specific and eerily accurate it is. Three minutes later we were back on beach path and ready for fun.
Wait a Minute
People often say if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute. Weather in some parts of the world seems to follow that adage, but I never thought that really applied to Hawaii. However, on this day it rang true. We played on the soft sand and enjoyed an empty beach as the weather shifted from clouds to sun and back again. It made for some dramatic lighting and happy memories.
