Time moves swiftly
I first photographed baby Sawyer as a newborn, snug in his Honolulu home. I have a special connection to his parents because of our shared conservation biology background and it felt as if I was taking this journey into parenthood with them. We planned to meet again for a woohoo-we-survived-our-first-year photo session. Visions of sand and surf danced in their heads as they paced the floor comforting a fussy, new baby. Maybe Waimanalo Beach? Maybe Kailua? Oh, I love Kailua. Remember that time when we just got in the car and went to the beach? Over the year, I caught glimpses of baby Sawyer through Facebook posts with his shock of blond hair and bright blue eyes. And just like that a year had passed.
Celebrating at Bellows Beach
I dubiously scanned the crowded beach as I waited for them in the parking lot at Bellows Beach. It was a perfect beach day which had attracted a serious crowd. Large tented parties and volleyball games battled for space on the sand while the ocean was dotted with swimmers. Not ideal for a photo session. But they pulled up, completely laid back and allowed me to drag them to a hidden pocket of forest. There, they got to snuggle and love on their little one and reminisce about the challenges of the past year.
P.S. If you’re loving Sawyer’s little tropicbird tee, you should check out Kealopiko for great Hawaiian-themed designs.
