Leaving Hawaii
This session ended too soon. It was a whirlwind of activity and noise and motion and in a flash, the last of the light was slipping behind the mountains. It was time to go home. For Shannon and her family, it was one of their last beach-y Hawaiian sunsets. They were moving to chilly Washington in a few days. A strange land where people wear shoes and jackets. That would be a bit of an adjustment.
Play hard
In the meantime, the plan was to play hard, something this family excels at. They live on base and have a special connection to North Beach (aka officer’s beach), so that’s where we met. We played with the Koolau’s as our magical backdrop. We ran, and jumped off cliffs, played silly games, and laughed a lot. The evening heat was intense so everyone was happy to cool off with a dive in the ocean. Better yet, we discovered that the tide was low enough to expose a long stretch of tidal shelf. The kids eagerly explored each nook which were teaming with fish and crabs. I may have gotten peed on by a sea cucumber. What a great way to say goodbye to Oahu.
