The pain started as a dull throb in my hip flexor. Slowly it began to radiate down my leg. Each step became harder, took more focus as if I was wearing a lead boot. But fun was happening around me and there was still the tiniest bit of light left! I was trying for dramatic slow shutter speed shot and needed the waves and kids just so. It was taking time, which I apparently didn’t have. I finally had to admit defeat. I approached my clients and sheepishly admitted that I had been stung by a man-o-war and was apparently having an allergic reaction. I felt embarrassed and foolish, but was also becoming dizzy and nauseated and those feelings were winning the battle.
Turns out (dun-dun-da-dah!) dad is a fireman and trained paramedic. I lowered my camera and he helped me hobble back to the car in the approaching twilight. The tired, hungry family didn’t stop there. They kindly sought treatment advice, stopped for Benedryl and delivered me to my doorstop. I am overcome with gratitude. But an allergy to Portugese man-o-wars? Come on, I didn’t even know that was a thing. My doctor said she’s never heard of it, but a quick poll of Facebook proved I wasn’t alone. The tiny blue balloons are most common on the windward side when the winds are blowing. Normally, it just stings a bit. Find out more about man-o-wars in Hawaii here.
As for my family, I could tell they were amazing from their session alone. Take a look for yourself …
No worries, you don’t have to be a trained paramedic to have a photo session with me. Although, it helps. At least if you see me tip-toeing over man-o-wars on the beach you’ll know why. Let’s plan a fun, sting-free family photo session. You can find the details here.
