A Kahala Beach Sunrise
The morning at Kahala Beach started off as a cool blue. The sun hid stubbornly behind a sheer layer of clouds as we talked and took in the scene. This stretch of beach is one of my favorites for Waikiki family portraits. It’s close to the activity of Waikiki but feels much further away. At sunrise, it’s rare to encounter another soul on this beach despite the sheer density of people in the area. That’s worth waking up for.
The Session
As we slowly eased into the session, the kids shared the many adventures they had in Hawaii already. From surf sessions and luaus to waterfall hikes, they already covered quite a bit of the island. Each child was charged with planning the activity for one day of the trip. Eagerly, they planned and debated their remaining few days on the island.
It was fun to see each personality emerge over the course of the morning – from an outgoing performer to silly and shy. Although they were each so different, they were all quick to hug and laughed often. Their closeness and love as a family were evident.
It wasn’t until late in the session the sun finally made an appearance. The full force of the sun warmed our skin; driving us into the water to cool off. We managed to fit in some serious splash fights and races before grumbling bellies demanded breakfast. A quick break to refuel and then onto another adventure.
