Kate was my very first documentary family film fan. She would tune into my Vimeo channel to watch my family films on loop. Now, these weren’t films of her family. They weren’t even people she knew. Still, there was something captivating about these families holding hands and laughing together that she returned to again and again. When her mom, a dear friend a fellow Hawaii photographer, told me this story I was touched. I wanted Kate to have her very own film.
The Film Session
Their family lives on Maui so when I booked a photo session for another family there, I extended my trip to capture a day in the life of Kate. The day evolved toddler style and we were able to capture a perfect day in Kate’s world. The day was filled with chickens, snacks, books, gardening, and fun with mom. We ended the day with a stunning sunrise at a secluded beach in Kihei. In fact, it was so lovely, I had to make a separate film just for our beach visit. This film, however, I may like like even a bit more. True, there was no beautiful background or sky alight with brilliant colors. It was a simple morning. A typical morning. And there is an undeniable beauty in that.
You can watch their day-in-the-life film below.
I grabbed some screenshots from the video as well –
