A very happy (holiday) birthday
If you have to have your birthday on a holiday, the fourth of July is a good one. After all you get to celebrate with friends and family and end your day with a big fireworks show. Not too shabby. Alyza’s parents take it one step further and make a trip to Hawaii each year around her birthday. When I first photographed their family she had been a tiny little thing just learning to walk. She was unsure about the feeling of sand on her feet and through baby giggles would hold one foot delicately in the air.
Feeling Moana
Before this visit, she had just seen Moana for the first time and was entranced. As the sun broke through the clouds, she gazed out over the ocean clutching her Moana necklace and singing softly to herself. The next day they were heading to Disney’s Aulani resort in Koolina to meet the Polynesian princess in person. It was all she could thing about. Meanwhile her baby brother was learning to navigate the sand. The camera kept distracting him and when he saw it pointed his way, would stop what he was doing, flash a big grin and yell “cheese” until I turned away laughing.
Eventually, the kids began to explore Kualoa Beach Park. We found some good trees for climbing and playing hide and seek until little bellies began to rumble. It was a beautiful morning.
