Home as family
I stumbled across an unexpectedly touching image from my personal archives recently. It was the living room of our first family home. Dim light filtered through the narrow windows to alight toys, books, and clothes strewn across the floor. At the very edge of the frame was my toddler fast asleep on the couch clutching a new pair of pink training underwear. Memories and feelings flooded back. At that time I wanted nothing more than to leave our dank, cramped house with the manic landlord that lived upstairs. But now, looking back, I realize that our house in all it’s imperfections was part our family. It set the stage for our lives and the images taken there make those memories all the richer.
Inside the dream house
Now imagine you’ve just built your dream house in the footprint of your childhood Nuuanu home. If you really liked your home? Well, I can’t think of a better place for a family photo session. And the kids kind of love it too. Jesse grabbed my hand as soon as I walked in the door, gave me a quick tour, and proudly showed me her room. She put me to work coloring. After, we lounged on the bed, played trains, threw over-sized stuffed animals, and sang many Frozen tunes. For the grand finale we ended at nearby Nuuanu park exploring amid the towering banyan and monkeypod trees. Jean told me as she looks through her gallery again and again, she finds new favorites – quirks and nuances that tell the story of this time in their lives.
