Sometimes I think I have a favorite age to photograph. I just returned from an amazing evening photographing a family with teenagers. It was full of silliness and the tiniest gestures that showed such a touching and strong bond. I have heard such horror stories about sweet, affectionate children morphing into sullen, moody beasts in their teens and it freaks me out. My oldest is only seven, but the thought lingers in the back of my mind. Spending time with an affectionate family like that one is immensely comforting.
But then there are joyful sessions like this one with preschool crowd. I just read a quote “Let me love you a little more before you’re not little anymore.” I feel that so strongly as my own children drift further away from babyhood. I want to hold onto those memories for myself and for others and the best way I know how is through photography. In the end I realize that what I really love to photograph is not a particular age, but a certain type of family. I am inspired by the love I see in families whether it’s shown through big hugs and sloppy kisses or silliness and play. In this session we had both.
We met bright and early at Paradise Cove for a busy morning shell hunting, splashing, and tickling. I can’t think of a better way to spend the start of a vacation.
