I spent a good portion of my life getting close and personal with various animals from birds and turtles to squirrels and foxes. I’ve been pooped on, bit, and scratched all in the name of science. For the record – all worth it. I share this background with Michelle and Tyler who have a long history studying and protecting rare plants and animals in remote locations. Although we had never met, our shared background gave me a strong feeling of connection as they anticipated the birth of their first son. My husband and I were in the same boat only a few years earlier and I was excited for them. They were about to start a very different kind of journey into the unknown.
I met them in their Kalihi home on a warm summer afternoon. A big sloppy nose greeted me at the door – the fur baby of the family – and ushered me inside. Sounds from the neighborhood filtered in as the couple attempted to soothe a fussy baby. They were calm and relaxed made caring for a new baby look effortless. Eventually, the little guy settled down to sleep and I caught some shots under the watchful animal eye. Welcome to the world little Sawyer.
